Yummy Yogurt

In the Northeastern U.S., we have access to a particularly delicious frozen yogurt shop called 16 Handles. If you live in or visit the area and you’ve never been there before, I highly recommend you check it out. From their creamy frozen yogurts in a variety of taste bud-pleasing flavors to all of the toppings your heart could ever desire, you’re sure to walk out satisfied both physically and mentally.

One of the best things about 16 Handles is that, if you’re unsure which flavor will soothe your soul, they’ll give you little tasters. This way, you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the yogurt you pick is the one that will make you feel the best, and you won’t be sorry about it one bit.

That’s exactly what I needed one day when I went into their store with my wife, even though I didn’t necessarily realize it at the time. Apparently my face said it though because, without ever uttering a word, a woman behind the counter said, “Don’t worry. I’m coming.”

Intrigued by the fact that the woman knew that I needed a taster before I’d even become aware of it myself, I asked, “How’d you know?”

“You had the look,” she responded. Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, so I began making a variety of looks and, before we knew it, we were all laughing, having a good time sharing expressions as if we were long-lost friends.

Once I’d finally decided on the flavor of yogurt I wanted, (chocolate of course)  I placed my yummy creation on the scale to be weighed (which is how they determine the cost). That’s when the person behind the counter informed me that I had a $5 credit thanks to being a loyal customer who frequented their shop regularly.

That was great and all, but my yogurt was only $2.77 or something like that, so if I took the credit, I’d lose the remaining $2.23. Realistically, this was no major loss, but it was one that the woman I’d just exchanged looks with didn’t want me to bear so she told the cashier to give me my yogurt for free.

It was only a couple of bucks, but it absolutely made my day. I gave her my best thank-you look as I thought about how just being nice to the people we interact with pays…and not just financially. It also pays in positive thoughts, happiness, and all of the good feelings that both parties walk away with at the end of the exchange.

As you go about your life today, think of all of the people who will cross your path and find ways to leave them with those same good vibes. Think about the clerk at the grocery store who you’ll interact with as you check out to pay or consider the person in line behind you as you wait for lunch at your favorite fast food joint.

No matter who it is, find ways to be friendly to them, elevating both of your spirits as a result. Say a kind word or make small talk just to share a few laughs and pass the time more enjoyably. While it may seem like something that is rather simple to you, you may never know how much a caring gesture at just the right time can positively impact someone else’s life. Trust me, it will. Just like it did mine that day.
