Why I Write Down My Goals (And You Might Also Want To)

I have certain goals in life—things I want to achieve and levels I want to reach. For instance, like most people, I want to improve my fitness. I know that being a regular exerciser will get me where I want to go in life, so I make this a priority and set goals that keep me progressing forward. And I make sure I write them down. Why? It makes them tangible.

If I don’t commit my goals to paper, they are only in my head, making them more fantasy than reality. They are images that I want to see happen, but they will likely never come to pass because I haven’t committed myself to them. After all, if I can’t take the two seconds necessary to write it down, really, how bad do I want it?

Of course, the goal has to be realistic or it isn’t going to work (and may even be harmful, depending on what it is). This may require doing a little bit of advanced research and finding out what realistic is for your particular goal.

For example, if you want to lose weight, then you likely learn through your research that 1-2 pounds a week is a healthy goal to aim for. If you want to grow your business, how fast you can do it depends on where you are right now and what industry you are in. The more you know beforehand, the more realistic your goal will be.

This saves you from the frustration that comes with goals that were too hefty to reach. It also helps you realize that reaching goals is a process, and one that often takes more time than we realize initially.

Once you know what your goal is, write it down and make a commitment to reaching it.

Some people even choose to sign theirs as if it is a contract, getting their mind to realize just how important this particular achievement is.

From here, review your goal every so often to see how you are doing. Are you getting closer to it? Further away from it? What needs to change? What needs to stay the same?

Breaking your goal down and visiting it regularly (like maybe monthly) also allows you to make it more manageable. For instance, if your goal is to get 60 new clients this year, that may seem like a lot, but when you break it down monthly, that is only five per month, or slightly over one per week. It gets you to the same destination but without the pressure of feeling as if you have to get there overnight.

So, take a moment right now and write down one goal that you want to reach by the end of the year. Then, break it down monthly so you know exactly what you need to accomplish to get where you want to be once the 12 months has passed. If you really want to accomplish that goal, break it down weekly and make it more structured yet.

Do this and you will get where you want to be. Just by writing it down. How great is that?
