Whatever It Takes

I work out with a personal trainer twice a week. This gives me the opportunity to learn which exercises will give me the results I want, as well as how to perform them with proper form so that I don’t inadvertently injure myself in my efforts to stay fit.

Just recently, my six-month commitment with my trainer was running out. I started thinking about whether I really wanted to re-up. After all, I don’t really like exercising, let alone having to do it twice a week. And the fact that I have to get myself up in the morning to go isn’t all that appealing either.

Why don’t I just join a gym? I kept asking myself. Then I could go when I wanted instead of having to stick to this schedule that I sometimes (okay, oftentimes) dread.

I was sharing this dilemma with a friend, almost pleading my case as to why I would be better off letting my commitment lapse. That’s when this friend said the one thing that made me realize that, not only would it not be in my favor to get rid of my personal trainer, but I’d actually likely be hurting myself if I made this choice.

My friend said, “If that’s what it takes for you to get your exercise done, then just do it.” And that friend was right.

If I decided to not renew with my trainer and join a gym instead, the truth is that I probably would not show up. I’m not one of those people who likes to “feel the burn” or who believes that there is benefit in “if you feel like dying, do 10 more.” I really don’t like working out.

But here’s the kicker: after every session with my personal trainer, I feel absolutely wonderful. I feel stronger, fitter, and in better shape. I also feel accomplished because, despite my desire to not want to get up and go, I did it anyway. It becomes an item that I can excitedly cross off my to-do list.

There is great benefit to understanding ourselves enough to know what we need to do to get the results we want to get, setting ourselves up for success along the way. It’s kind of like when you decide to diet and clean all of the junk food out of your house. If you leave that stuff in your fridge and cupboards, it’s way too easy to give into the temptation and do something that sabotages your goal.

Thinking about your own life, what are some things you could do today to help make it easier to achieve success tomorrow? What plans can you make, what strategies can you put in place that will make the process less frustrating? What can you do that will turn your long and winding road into a shorter, straighter path?

Once you identify these things, put them into place. Then all you have to do is show up and follow your plan through. Make it a priority to­­­­ set yourself up for success.
