T.G.I.F. Means T.R.O.U.B.L.E

How many times have you heard someone say “T.G.I.F.!” or “It’s Monday already? Ugh! What happened to the weekend? They’re always waayyyy too short”?

Or maybe it isn’t someone else that you’re hearing say these things. Maybe the mouth that these kinds of I-love-the-weekend and I-hate-the-work-week statements are coming from is actually yours?

Well, in my experience, someone who repeatedly says “T.G.I.F.” is in T.R.O.U.B.L.E. Why?

Most of us work 40 to 50 hours a week at our jobs, if not more. So, if we’re spending the entire time we’re there wishing that we weren’t, this is a sign that something is amiss in our lives. Something isn’t working for us, making us continuously unhappy day after day.

Imagine for a second that you were so excited about what you did during the work week that, instead of saying, “Thank God it’s Friday!” you said, “Thank God it’s Monday” or “Thank God it’s Tuesday.” Picture yourself being so eager to go to work that, when Friday afternoon rolled around and you were faced with having the next two days off, you began anticipating Monday morning, when you could return to work and do what it is you love.

For most people, this seems like a pipe dream, like something that only happens in the movies or, worse yet, doesn’t happen at all. But the reality is that it does. There are actually people who are excited to get up and go to work every day. And it’s because they’re doing something they love. They’re involved in a career that links their passion with action.

So if you find that you’re simply surviving your work weeks, that your whole goal on Monday mornings is solely to make it through until Friday at 5, ask yourself what isn’t working in your life. Why is it that you’re not happy with what it is you do?

Is it that your job is requiring too much time away from family? Do you not feel challenged enough? Maybe you’re actually in the wrong field or you aren’t working in an area that makes you feel alive? Or perhaps, overall you like what you’re doing, but you don’t feel like you’re making a big enough impact…like you’re not living up to your potential?

Whatever it is, it’s important to figure it out…and then do something about it. Take your “T.G.I.F.” as a wakeup call that something isn’t working in your life and make a commitment to do what it takes to fix it.

Of course, we all go through times when we find it difficult to get out of bed and go to work, like if we’re not feeling well or something else in our life is bothering us, but if this is more the rule than the exception, that’s a sign that trouble lies ahead. It’s time to take a good, hard look at your life and make it a priority to change it. Delve into the areas where you feel like you’re lacking and make a commitment to yourself to go out into the world and get what it is you need.

Who knows? You may just start saying “T.G.I.M.!” That would be something, wouldn’t it?
