When you’re a “solopreneur”, whether you’re a speaker like me, a real estate broker, an insurance agent, or some other one-person type of business, you don’t have the luxury of a team of employees or staff surrounding you daily to help you grow your company. In contrast, as a solopreneur you must generally create a team for yourself by using other professionals in various capacities to help you build your business so it becomes stronger and more profitable. And the more A+ they are, the more A+ you will be as well.
For instance, I work with Christina DeBusk, a freelance writer who helps me keep up with all of my content-related needs, and David Newman, a marketer who works with me to get my message out and attract more clients. (I don’t look at it like they work for me because we all have to work together in order for any of us to progress.)
Anyway, Christina and David are pillars for me, each one contributing to my business in a very strong and meaningful way. And, like literal pillars, they have to be A+, ready to carry their own weight, or the foundation they hold—my business—could potentially crumble and fall.
To use a different analogy, it’s kind of like driving a car. If you have a flat tire, you may eventually get where it is you want to go with a flat, but it’s going to be a bumpy and slow ride that will likely test every ounce of patience you have in your body. Instead, if you would just change the tire, get rid of the flat and replace it with a new, air-filled tire, then your ride will be smoother and more enjoyable. Plus, you’ll do less damage to the vehicle (your business) by taking this particular route.
Essentially, it goes back to the phrase, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.” In other words, if you have a member on your team that isn’t doing what he or she is supposed to, that somehow isn’t fully engaged or giving their best (maybe they’re a C- team member), then you aren’t able to give your best either. Your work product will suffer, potentially causing you to lose clients to your competitors. However, if your team is solid and hard-working, then you will become an impenetrable force that can knock your competition clear out of the park.
Look at your own team and really think about how they are working for you. Is each team member a pillar that is strong and secure, a true A+ in every sense, or are they more of a C or D team member who is keeping you from where you want to be? If they’re not pulling their weight, then switching them out for someone that will can help you take your business where you want it to go.
Now, some people think that they have to do everything themselves to ensure that those things are done properly. In reality, they don’t. Instead, just do your due diligence and create an A+ team that shares your work ethic and values. A team that is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that both you and your business shine from all different angles. A team that is filled with air, ready to navigate the road and get you where you want to go…as smoothly, safely, and comfortably as possible.
