In my speaking engagements and in my book, Live Your YOUlogy, I share a number of stories about my life. I admit that I was once on top of the world with a great career and loving family and, before I knew it, I was flung to the bottom. I went through things that I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy, things such as divorce and not being able to see my kids as often as I like, which caused me to experience high levels of anxiety and depression, unimaginable stress, and more.
There were many times when I felt like my world would collapse under the weight of it all. Some of those times I was even sure it had, feeling as if I had hundreds of pounds of pressure placed upon my body, wondering how much more I had to go through before the weight would lift and things would get better.
Slowly but surely, things began to turn around and my life was no longer in a tailspin, allowing me to start to fly again. The chaos settled in my personal relationships and my professional life was beginning to flourish as I shared not only my pain, but also my lessons with others, hoping that they could learn from my mistakes, never having to make some of their own and avoiding some pain themselves.
It wasn’t a simple or easy process, but it was a process nonetheless. Now it takes quite a bit to stress me out, but it really wasn’t that long ago that I couldn’t have said that.
I now realize intellectually that all of my struggles will eventually pass and things will be okay. My body may be fighting whatever I have going on and experience the symptoms of too much stress from time to time (like tense muscles and headaches), but in the end I know that things will work out. Why? Because they always do.
I admit that it is particularly bothersome to me when I see people who appear to have stress every minute of every day. Stress is an energy drain and does nothing useful for you. It doesn’t help at all, making it even more unbearable to think of all of the people who are suffering with it simply because they can’t see that good things await them as long as they’re willing to make it through the storm.
Like my father always said, “All you need is a roof over your head and food on the table.” In other words, anything more than that is a luxury. All of the material things you want aren’t worth the stress because you have what it takes to survive. You have shelter and nourishment, which means that you have the necessities.
Certainly, life is more pleasurable when you have all of the comforts that your heart desires, but it always helps to remember that just because you don’t have them now doesn’t mean that you won’t ever have them. It only means that you don’t have them YET.
As I’ve often said, “It will all be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” Great things await you when you keep faith during your struggles. Actually, they await you anyway, so why sweat what is going on right now and waste your valuable time and energy worrying about something that may or may not happen?
If it’s meant to be, it will. If it isn’t, it won’t. Either way, it will be okay.
