Energy Out Brings Energy In – And Then Some

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

About a year ago, I agreed to give a speech to an organization for one of my brothers. It’s not like that is any big surprise since that is what I love to do, yet suffice it to say that it had been an extremely challenging day and didn’t feel like getting in front of a group that night. How was I going to motivate them when I couldn’t even motivate myself?

I’m not going to lie, the thought of calling and cancelling did cross my mind a time or two. However, I was doing it pro bono (which means free of charge), so what kind of jerk would I be if I didn’t show up when I said I would? The big kind, that’s for sure, so I made the only choice I could – I would go and speak and put on my happy, life-is-grand face.

Now, I knew this was probably a bad idea because my lack of energy would most certainly make me ineffective as a speaker. My not so pleasant day would be apparent on my face and the crowd would see right through me. I was sure I had met my doom. Little did I know that I was dead wrong.

Energy Out Brings Energy In

As I started speaking, doing what I always do, what I am passionate about doing, my energy increased. It was as if I was throwing a little bit of energy out into the room and each person was adding some energy to it and throwing it right back to me. I swear that there was almost this circle of energy that kept bouncing back and forth between us, getting stronger with each deflection.

There is no doubt that I left that event with twenty times more energy than I had shown up with. I had vigor, I had excitement, and I had life! So did the crowd!

Showing Up is Half the Battle

Of course, I never would have experienced this explosive energy in the first place if I had cancelled the speech due to the way I felt. Neither will you if you let your lack of energy drive your decisions and cause you to sit on the sidelines of life instead of joining in the game.

So, instead of thinking that you don’t have what it takes to get through an event, think of all of the great things you can receive from it simply by showing up. Consider that whatever you give while you are there, whether it is love, compassion, motivation, or energy, that is what you will get back – and then some.

Imagine the circle going from you to the others there and back to you increasing in size every step of the way. Like a sponge, soak it all in and hold it close to your heart. Embrace what they have to give you and make it yours.

Then give it back so they can experience the same amount of energy and life, with yours added to it. Let this go on and on until you feel like you’re going to explode. Lavish in what they have to offer to you and then turn around and give it back to return the favor.

When you do, your relationships will be deeper, your feelings stronger, and your life more fulfilled. That’s a win in anyone’s book!
