Citibike!

Here in New York, if you want to get from one place to another, one option is to ride a Citibike. This allows you to save your cab fare and still get where you want to go quicker than if you were to walk. Plus, it’s a great way to see the city while getting in a little cardio exercise at the same time.

One day, I was on one of these Citibikes and I decided to go a different way than usual to wherever it was I was going. At one point during my new route, I turned to the right and notice that there, getting out his car, was my brother. My brother! This was an unexpected surprise because he lives in a suburb 45 minutes away from the city.

After getting over the amazement that, in a city of 9 million people, I would run into him, we talked a minute, shared a few laughs, and then each went on our own way. It was a pleasant treat that made my day that much better, as I hope that it did his.

A few days later, I decided to take again an alternate route on a Citibike. At one point on my ride, I turned around, and I saw my son Ariel. Had I stuck to my original plan or even arrived a mere 10 seconds later, our paths would’ve never crossed that day. Not that it’s a major deal, but it is kind of amazing that we would bump into each other in that time and space, something I would have completely missed had I stayed with my intended path.

The reason I share these stories is because, so often, we’re afraid to take a different way to get wherever it is we’re going. We fear that if we don’t stick to something we’re familiar with or stay true to our planned course of action, we will never make it to our destination. Well, at least, not in one piece anyway.

However, some of life’s greatest and most memorable moments come from taking roads we never intended to travel. They happen when we least expect it, so that makes them even sweeter. When we had no expectations for them, any benefits they offer are just icing on the cake.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you’re able to take a different route, don’t look at it as something inconvenient, as something that will take more time or require more work. Instead, view it as an opportunity to see things you’ve never seen, to have experiences you’ve never had, and ultimately to grow.

Sometimes life happens more beautifully in the most unexpected places, so trust the journey and take the time to make the most of it. You never know what will happen when you do…or, in my case, who you’ll run into along the way.
