Change It Up

Friday, May 4th, 2018

I’m a speaker, so by default I want people to hear and see me speak. While I’ve already published a book about my story and I write a blog once a week to help others get to know me better, the reality is that the best way for me to get speaking gigs is for people to actually see what I do. They need to watch me in action and experience first-hand how I share my message with the world.

This is why I’ve decided to add to my repertoire and create weekly video posts. This way, people can see for themselves how I interact with others. It gives them a better feel of how I would engage with them if they were to hire me as a keynote speaker or as a leader of a workshop.

Though I’m comfortable with my current process, I want more. And the only way I’m going to get more is by doing different things. In other words, if I want to make a change as in grow my speaking business—the only way I am going to do that is to change the way I do things. If I don’t, I’ll never have anything more than the status quo.

That’s the tricky thing about change. Many of us want different results, yet we continue to do the same things we’ve always done, just hoping to get a different result. But that would be like setting a bowl of water in a 30 degree room and praying that this time it doesn’t freeze. It will. Why? Because it does so every time.

If you truly want different results in any part of your life, creating a more positive result, a more positive future, you need to change things up.

For instance, if your goal is to increase your business by 10 percent in the following 12 months, this may include doing more cold calls or increasing your rate of follow up. If you don’t make these types of changes to your current plan of action and simply continue to do what you’ve always done, your business will likely remain stagnant or even shrink.

So how do you make this positive change happen? Start by choosing one thing every day that gets you closer to your goal. Physically write it on your calendar so you treat it with the same priority as everything else on your schedule. And then do it. Each step forward propels you to the next step.

Another thing that can help is to get an accountability buddy. This is someone who will motivate and inspire you to achieve the changes you’ve set out to make. It’s someone who acts as both a coach and a cheerleader, and keeps you on track.

The only way to truly change your life is to change the way you act. Be diligent in taking positive steps in the direction you want to go.

Change begets change. It’s the only thing that does.
